That's me!
(yeah...i've been at this a while...)
When I was in third grade I told my parents I wanted to be like my big brother and learn how to play the guitar. So they bought one for me and signed me up for lessons.
I hated it. I wanted to quit immediately. They reminded me it that I was the one that told them I wanted to do it. They said that if I stuck with it through the series of lesson books, when I finished them I could decided what I wanted to do. (Turns out it was a lesson in keeping your word when you make a commitment. But I was too young to realize that at the time.)
I completed the lesson book series a few years later. While I never fell in "love" with playing, I grew to...not mind it, so I stuck with it a little longer. But when the next books were finished, I put the guitar in its case, put it in the closet and thought, "Done with that."
A few years later, some teammates from the swim told me to bring my guitar over to their house and they were going to hang around a play songs. So I dug the guitar out of the closet, dusted off the case and headed over. They showed me a few things I didn't know and taught me new songs. That is when it changed. I had the opportunity to play songs that I wanted to play, not those "boring, old" songs from the lesson books.
I fell in love with playing and singing. I joined bands in hight school and played solo. I've been at it ever since.
